I'm sure many reading this will agree, as they know it in their bones - allotments are great. You've met friends, got good produce, from yours or an enthusiastic friend, or just felt better to get on your plot after a stressy day.
Well, the Brighton and Hove Allotment Federation have helped us out by actually quantifying it - showing that financially, for Councils and communities, allotments are an investment that bring multiple, quantifiable benefits. These benefits include achieving net zero targets, aiding nature recovery and reducing waste.
- Allotment ground is a better store of carbon and has better flood prevention potential than other ground
- The experience of having an allotment has a positive effect on mental health AND loneliness
- Food produced contributes to reduced packaging AND food miles.
The allotment federation's report found that the benefits to their Council could be quantified to over £160 per allotment plot. Find out more here
We know that in some areas of Herefordshire there are waiting lists, so that the need and the wish is there - we also know that Food Banks are receiving surplus already, so we know that allotments are being used.
