On Sunday 15 September Herefordshire Food Alliance took part in a conversation focused on food, organised by the 3 Counties Doughnut Economics group.
In brief, Doughnut Economics is a visual framework, shaped like a ring doughnut, combining the concept of planetary boundaries with the complementary concept of social boundaries. To find out more watch this short film.
During the day, a group of around 20 people from the counties of Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire shared their thoughts, ideas and concerns about issues facing food suppliers, food producers and communities.
Discussions ranged from mental health issues to ‘The Right to Grow’ as explained here by the inspirational organisation Incredible Edible CIC.
Our closing conversation focused on how we can work together to develop a new community hub which could include locally grown, sustainably grown and sourced produce.
This is an evolving discussion, so watch this space - and do please link with us if you are working on similar things in Herefordshire!

We’ll leave you with some food for thought…
“When we really understand how this global economic system ended up, essentially destroying our health, our wellbeing, and the health and wellbeing of all of life. What we’ll see is that the way the system operated was to drive us away from our food production, from the land from which we got our food and if we were to restore local food economies worldwide, we would basically be talking about a world where the military industrial complex couldn’t exist.”
